Caroline Monk, better known as Monkey, was born on Canvey Island Essex.
She did however get over that. In 1995 she moved to Ibiza where she met Mike (Tubular Bells) Oldfield. She ended up playing his bells regularly on stage and got the taste for fame and fortune, touring the whole of Europe as his pa/manager, stylist, nursemaid, therapist and pimp. Monkey and Mike parted ways in 2000 but still remain great friends.
Caroline moved back to London using her music contacts to start a new life as a music/showbiz pr. Amongst her clients was her idol Elvis Presley.
Monkey's pr efforts with Elvis' album 30#1 hits resulted in record sales for an Elvis album. She was awarded a Platinum disc for her success and is known as an Elvis expert. Other accounts have included HMV, NME Awards, Mercury Awards, and many, many more.
At the end of 2004 Caroline was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Instead of it ruining her life, she made cancer her life. Her column in Closer magazine (Monkey's Business) detailed her journey through cancer for a year. The column was so successful that she was asked to become an Agony Aunt for Closer magazine and continues to be.
With "Monkey's Business" growing in popularity, TV and press appearances followed and soon Caroline had won the hearts and minds of Cancer Charities across the UK. Caroline has since busied herself working with these charities and is the patron of the Pink Ribbon Foundation. Through her own experience with this devastating disease and seeing how it continues to effect others she has set up Caroline's Campaign.
The future
Caroline's Campaign is something I dreamed up whilst going through Breast Cancer in 2005. My weekly column in Closer Magazine detailed my journey through Cancer and I received thousands of e-mails and letters. The central theme to most of the feedback I received was not how ill women felt or if they were worried about dying but how they looked after losing their feminine appearance. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can really take a toll on your body.
It takes away all your hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, you can put on weight and many even lose their breasts. Some women don't leave their homes until their hair grows back and they feel normal again. This is the last thing you need when you're suffering with this terrible disease. Having been there, I believe that getting out, socialising and trying to live a normal life is important to your recovery. I want to make sure women get access to good wigs, can have them cut in great styles and provide information about tattooing for eye brows which can be a great option if you lose yours. There are great specialist bras out there if you have gone through surgery. Once you know how to deal with the symptoms you'll look as great as you did and you'll have no need to hide away.
So my main aim is to help women who are suffering with Cancer look and feel as beautiful as they always were. I will be touring the UK with a team of specialists, encouraging hairdressers all over the UK to cut wigs for free for Cancer patients. This would be such an amazing help.
