Gemma first gained national recognition as Lisa Hunter in ‘Hollyoaks.’ Over the past few years she’s taken her acting career to new heights. After starring in the West End show ‘Calendar Girls’ in 2009, she was offered a larger lead role to play in the UK Tour of the production and received wide acclaim from critics nationwide. Gemma’s success on stage quickly opened doors for further television appearances on programmes such as, ‘The Bill’ (2009), ‘Waterloo Road’ (2011) and BBC’s ‘Casualty’, where her character Tamzin Bayle won the hearts of the nation with a recurring role from 2011-2012 and she returned to our screens in May 2014. Furthermore Gemma starred as Becky Bryson in ITV's 'Law & Order UK', alongside Paul Nicholls and Bradley Walsh. She then went on to play Carly Hope in ITV's Emmerdale from 2015 - 2017 and became one of the most popular characters on the ITV soap, which led to her first NTA nomination for 'Best Newcomer'.

Gemma’s film career has also moved from strength to strength. Her entrance onto the movie scene saw her take on roles in titles such as ‘The Baseline’ and ‘Boogie Woogie’ where she starred alongside Joanna Lumley, Heather Graham, and Christopher Lee. Her later work has progressed to playing the lead female in feature films ‘How to Stop Being a Loser’, the ‘Devil’s Pass’ (directed by Die Hard’s Renny Harlin), and with her first foray in Bollywood, the movie ‘Fever’ where she starred alongside Rajeev Khandelwal. To all gaming fanatics out there she is known as ‘Lieutenant Eva’ in ‘Command and Conquer – Red Alert 3’ which was released worldwide in October 2008.

In 2017, Gemma was a smash hit on BBC One’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing', reaching the final with professional partner Aljaz Skorjanec. Since then, she has been embraced by the media, featuring in an array of publications including Fabulous, Women’s Health, Women’s Fitness, Hello, OK and the Daily Mail online. In 2013 - 2014 Gemma was the face of innovative sports brand USA Pro and in 2019, Gemma was picked for the cover of Women's Health Magazine for the second time. 

In June 2018, her avid enthusiasm for health and fitness reached new heights, with the launch of her own activewear brand - GA by Gemma Atkinson. This received phenomenal support from her fans and the media, watch this space! Additionally, in 2018 Gemma released her first book 'The Ultimate Body Plan' to share her passion for health and fitness to her fans. Gemma’s athletic physique is down to her passion for a healthy lifestyle balanced with regular exercise and good nutrition. In January 2022 Gemma launched her very own activewear collection with 'In The Style.' It was important to Gemma that the range was inclusive, and designed for the gym-goers, the mid-morning coffee runners, and everyone in between. Gemma is also set to publish her second book in 2022 'The Ultimate Body Plan for New Mums: 12 Weeks to Finding You Again', giving new mums a sustainable fitness plan and healthy recipes to help them feel their best.

Gemma has become fondly known for hosting Hits Radio Drive time show, Monday to Friday from 4pm with Mike Toolan. As well as Hits, she regularly presents alongside Steph McGovern on Channel 4's current lunchtime show Steph's Packed Lunch, chatting with celebrity guests about all things lifestyle and top stories making the headlines. Gemma has also co hosted BBC Morning Live with Gethin Jones.

Now, with over 1.7 million followers on instagram, Gemma continuously works with brands that align with her ethos and passions, such as, Symprove, All Plants, My Pura, CBII as well as household names such as Indesit, eBay, Vodafone, Purina, Hamleys, SKY, Reebok and Morrisons. Gemma was also previously an ambassador for sustainable baby brand My Pura, spreading the word about unnecessary plastics in baby products.
